3 PATHWAYS TO BECOME A PARISH COUNCILLOR​
  • STANDING FOR ELECTION

  • CO-OPTION filling a vacant seat post-election

  • FILING FOR A CASUAL VACANCY when an elected member ceases to be an elected member as a result of, for example, their death, resignation, becoming disqualified, or being no longer qualified to remain elected​​.

  • You must be 18+
  • Be a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, a qualifying EU citizen or an EU citizen with retained rights.
  • Meet at least on of the three qualifications;
    • Your name must appear on the register of local government electors for the parish/community at the time of your nomination and throughout your term of office should you be elected.
    • You have lived in the parish/community area or within three miles of it during 12 months before the day of your nomination and the day of election
    • Your principal or only place of work during the 12 months before your nomination and the day of the election has been in the parish area.
    • You do not have to have paid employment to qualify, as long as your main or only place of work is in the parish/community area.​

ELIGIBITY CRITERIA TO STAND AS A CANDIDATE

HOW TO APPLY AS A CANDIDATE

Deadline is 4:00 PM on Wednesday 2nd April, 2025

  • Nominations open on Tuesday 25th March 2025.

  • The nomination paper, home address form and consent to nomination must be delivered by hand to the Returning Officer, County Hall, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 1UD 

  • All sections of submitted forms must be fully completed, including the name of the Parish and Parish Ward (where applicable) for which you are nominated, and the Electoral Numbers of your Proposer and Seconder.

  • Where a Parish is divided into Wards, then your Proposer and Seconder must be registered electors for the Ward in which you wish to be nominated.

  • If elected, members of Parish, Town and Community Councils are required to abide by the adopted Code of Conduct and to complete a register of interests which will be published on the Isle of Wight Council website and the website of the relevant Parish, Town or Community Council.​
